SATs Information for Parents
At St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School, national assessments are one of the ways we understand how well pupils are progressing in their learning. Our approach to SATs is calm, supportive and child-centred, ensuring pupils feel confident and secure.
SATs are only one part of a wider assessment picture and do not define a child or their achievements.
SATs (Standard Assessment Tests) are national assessments used across England to support teacher assessment and ensure consistency between schools.
SATs take place at:
- Key Stage 1 (Year 2)
- Key Stage 2 (Year 6)
They help schools and parents understand how pupils are working in relation to age-related expectations and support a smooth transition between key stages.
Across both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2:
- SATs are completed during the school day in a familiar environment
- Pupils are well prepared through everyday learning, not extra pressure
- Emotional wellbeing is prioritised
- Children are encouraged to simply try their best
Teacher judgement remains central to assessment and is informed by:
- Day-to-day classwork
- Observations across the year
- National assessments where appropriate
SATs results:
- Contribute to overall teacher assessment
- Help inform planning and support for pupils
- Are shared with parents at the end of the academic year
- Support transition to the next stage of education
Results are reported using national assessment language, including whether pupils are working towards, at, or above the expected standard.
Parents can support their child by:
- Encouraging regular reading for enjoyment
- Supporting homework routines
- Maintaining good sleep and attendance
- Keeping conversations about SATs positive and reassuring
The most important message for children is that they are supported, valued and encouraged to do their best.
More detailed information about specific SATs assessments is provided separately to ensure clarity and avoid overload. This includes:
- KS1 SATs guidance for parents
- KS2 SATs guidance for parents
