Sport and PE

At St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School we like to keep the children fit and healthy by encouraging a balanced and healthy lifestyle. We have plenty of Sports and PE taking place within our curriculum time but also during playtime and after school.

We have achieved the School Games Gold Mark for the last three years and have received the Change 4 Life Gold award in recognition of our Sports provision.

Lunchtime Provision

We employ specialist sports coaches to engage and enthuse the pupils during our lunch hours. The pupils are encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities during their lunchtime. We hope this approach encourages the children to sustain a healthy lifestyle.

Daily Mile

Children from Year 1 - Year 6 partake in a Daily Mile run around the playground or school field.

After School Clubs

We offer after school clubs Monday - Thursday every week. These change on a termly basis and are always very popular! For more information on the current clubs please see the 'After School Clubs' page on our website or speak to the school office.

Competitive Sport

We participate regularly at competitive sporting events in the local community and sometimes further a field! We encourage children from Key Stage One and Key Stage Two to take part in our sporting events.

Please see some of our recent photographs below!

Curriculum PE:

Children in Key Stage One and Key Stage Two take part in two hours of structured curriculum PE time each week. These lessons will be split into five core teaching areas:

  1. Dance
  2. Gymnastics
  3. Invasion Games
  4. Net/Wall Games
  5. Athletics

During their time at St John's children will receive a broad and balanced physical education, as we carefully structure the PE Curriculum throughout school to ensure there is variety and coverage within each Key Stage. In Year 5 all children benefit from a weekly swimming lesson at our local swimming pool.

In Foundation Stage children usually partake in one structured PE lesson a week and also benefit from lots of physical activity in their play and exploration.
