PSHE Curriculum Intent Statement

Our curriculum begins the moment children are welcomed into our school and is comprised of all the carefully crafted decisions we make that impact our learners. Our aim is to prepare our children for their futures, enabling them to use their God-given talents to achieve their full potential. Thus allowing them to live out our virtues and take advantage of every opportunity so that they are best-prepared for their life in an ever-changing world.

We instil self-belief, courage and ambition in our pupils with our mission that:

Growing in God’s Love

At St. John’s we follow the Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust’s Curriculum. We follow the You, Me & PSHE Scheme designed by Islington County Council.

The scheme focuses on seven different strands:

  • Relationships and sex education (RSE)
  • Drug, alcohol and tobacco education (DATE)
  • Keeping safe and managing risk
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Identity, society and equality
  • Careers, financial capability and economic wellbeing

Staff support their teaching using a range of online and interactive programmes, using resources such as Ten:Ten to support our Catholic teachings and coinciding sessions linked to themed weeks such as Mental Health and Child Safety Week.

At St. John the Baptist we believe our PSHE curriculum provides a range of opportunities and enhancements for all our pupils. Within PSHE, this includes elements such as:

Trips and Educational Visits such as:
Visiting church and other places of worship, attending sporting events, residentials to build relationships and team-building elements, reward trips to celebrate behaviour

We invite visitors into school to support our teaching:
– Parents/Grandparents (Careers Day)
– Water Safety Officers
– Local PCSO’s
– Road Safety Team
– Bikeability (KS1 and KS2)
– Heart Start
– School Nurse

We follow the You, Me, PSHE scheme, using Ten: Ten RSE resources to enhance teaching and a range of other resources and websites.

  • Through the curriculum, assemblies, wider opportunities, visits, discussions and literature, develop and deepen pupils’ understanding of the fundamental British Values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, mutual respect and tolerance.
  • Show our high expectations for all our pupils through an ambitious and inclusive curriculum where they are being extended beyond their academic achievements.
  • Provide a broad and balanced curriculum for every child, ensuring learning is correctly and progressively sequenced, supporting the pupils to develop in many diverse aspects of life.
  • Use creative learning opportunities wherever possible so that children can learn actively and in innovative ways, building their confidence and resilience. Developing confidence and knowledge so that they can keep themselves mentally healthy.
  • Ensure there are opportunities for links and connections to be made by all our pupils so that they know and remember more through a spiral curriculum.
  • Enable pupils to recognise online and offline risks to their well-being and the dangers of inappropriate use of social media.
  • Give our children a thirst for learning and the confidence to use their unique talents to contribute to society as responsible, respectful and active citizens who are able to play their part and become actively involved in public life as adults.
  • Provide an inclusive environment that meets the needs of all pupils, irrespective of age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief.
  • Develop pupils’ understanding of how to keep physically healthy, eat healthily and maintain an active lifestyle.
