English Curriculum Intent Statement
Our curriculum begins the moment children are welcomed into our school and is shaped by all the carefully crafted decisions that influence our learners. Our aim is to prepare children for their futures, enabling them to use their God-given talents to achieve their full potential. In doing so, they are supported to live out our virtues and seize every opportunity, ensuring they are well prepared for life in an ever-changing world. We nurture self-belief, courage and ambition in our pupils through our mission:
Growing in God’s Love
At St John’s we follow the Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust’s curriculum design for core and foundation subjects, in line with the National Curriculum for the teaching of English.

As a school we will:
- Build a love of reading for all pupils through a broad range of texts, interactive programmes and visual imagery. Scaffolded approaches and model texts will support and engage learners.
- Show high expectations for all pupils through an ambitious, inclusive curriculum, offering support and intervention where required.
- Provide a broad and balanced curriculum for every child, ensuring learning is carefully sequenced so that year group expectations are taught, revisited and secured, enabling steady progress.
- Use creative learning opportunities so that children can learn actively and in imaginative ways, embedding prior knowledge and engaging with new ideas through model texts, varied genres, drama, art and videography.
- Ensure opportunities for meaningful links across reading, writing and spelling systems.
- Give children a strong desire for learning and the confidence to use their unique talents as respectful, active citizens.
- Build resilience and courage within their writing, preparing them for a modern world in which they can adapt, flourish and thrive.
