D.T Curriculum Intent Statement

Our curriculum begins the moment children are welcomed into our school and is comprised of all the carefully crafted decisions we make that impact our learners. Our aim is to prepare our children for their futures, enabling them to use their God-given talents to achieve their full potential. Thus, allowing them to live out our virtues and take advantage of every opportunity so that they are best-prepared for their life in an ever-changing world.

We instil self-belief, courage and ambition in our pupils with our mission that we are:

Growing in God’s Love

At St. John’s we follow the Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust’s Curriculum design for core and foundation subjects. This falls in line with our National Curriculum for teaching D.T.

At St. John the Baptist we believe our D.T curriculum provides a range of opportunities and enhancements for all our pupils. Within D.T this includes elements such as:

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

In the Early Years a wide range of large-scale resources are used for constructions. These are then built on with our DT curriculum.

Cooking opportunities with local produce including home-grown vegetables and rhubarb

Collaboration with other schools

Cross-curricular links are made whenever appropriate to DT e.g.
Children in Y1 baked bread to help them understand the Great Fire of London

Art & DT Week highlighting a range of Yorkshire-based sculptors & craftspeople

As a school we will:

  • Build a love of reading for all pupils, exposing pupils to rich texts, language and information about DT.
  • Show our high expectations for all our pupils through an ambitious and inclusive curriculum, developing DT skills for all pupils.
  • Provide a broad and balanced curriculum for every child, ensuring learning is correctly and progressively sequenced.
  • Use creative learning opportunities wherever possible so that children can learn actively and in innovative ways. We will make creative links to other subjects e.g. Creative RE and use skills of different staff in school to model and show the relevance of DT in everyday life.
  • Ensure there are opportunities for local geographical links and connections to be made by all our pupils so that they know and remember more because the content is more pertinent to their lives.
  • Give our children a wider appreciation and non-judgemental viewpoint of varied D.T disciplines so that they can select the most appropriate tool modelled by different sculptors, craftspeople and wood/metal workers to successfully accomplish their own designs.
  • Build resilience and courage as we prepare them for a modern world in which they can adapt, flourish and thrive, knowing the importance of DT skills and how they are integral to everyday life.
