Art Curriculum Intent Statement
Our curriculum begins the moment children are welcomed into our school and is comprised of all the carefully crafted decisions we make that impact our learners. Our aim is to prepare our children for their futures, enabling them to use their God-given talents to achieve their full potential. Thus, allowing them to live out our virtues and take advantage of every opportunity so that they are best-prepared for their life in an ever-changing world.
We instil self-belief, courage and ambition in our pupils with our mission that we are:
Growing in God’s Love
At St. John’s we follow the Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust’s Curriculum design for core and foundation subjects. This falls in line with our National Curriculum for teaching Art.
At St. John the Baptist we believe our Art curriculum provides a range of opportunities and enhancements for all our pupils. Within Art this includes elements such as:
Themed Art Week
(Female Artists, Male Artists, Artists in celebration of Diversity, Yorkshire Artists)
Trips: Hepworth, Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Artists in touch with school:
Yara El-Sherbini (exhibited at Yorkshire Sculpture Park)
Collaboration with other schools
Art Club for KS2 ran by Mrs Steadman
Local and National Competitions:
Coronation Design competition
As a school we will:
- Build a love of reading for all pupils, using texts within our Art lessons that educate and inform.
- Show our high expectations for all our pupils through an ambitious and inclusive curriculum. We make links to Artists children can visit the work of and whose heritage is based in our local area e.g. Barbara Hepworth.
- Provide a broad and balanced curriculum for every child, ensuring learning is correctly and progressively sequenced.
- Use creative learning opportunities wherever possible so that children can learn actively and in innovative ways. Other subjects in school are emphasising creative working means such as different artistic mediums (Creative RE).
- Ensure there are opportunities for local geographical links and connections to be made by all our pupils so that they know and remember more because the content is more pertinent to their lives.
- Give our children a wider appreciation and non-judgemental viewpoint of varied Art disciplines so that they understand the contrasting mediums used by different artists. Our children will know how Art can be used as a platform for the Artist’s voice. They will have the confidence to use their unique talents to contribute to society as respectful and active citizens.
- Build resilience and courage as we prepare them for a modern world in which they can adapt, flourish and thrive, using art as an exploratory means to empathise with themselves and others.
